Networking and VoIP Technologies (3645)
This course is not currently offered by Global Knowledge. Information here is provided for reference only.
The Networking and VoIP Technologies course introduces you to Ethernet technology, Internet Protocol (IP) networking, and the fundamentals of Voice over IP technology terminology and concepts. This foundation-level course is designed for design and support specialists with a working knowledge of voice and data, who need the fundamentals of Ethernet and Voice over IP technologies, including:
- Operational and theoretical components of Ethernet networks
- Basic concepts of IP networking, the IP suite, and the basics of routing
- Major components of the VoIP network
- Voice packetization, voice quality, and bandwidth
- Traffic convergence issues and network assessment
- VoIP standardization and protocols
What You'll Learn
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of enterprise communication solutions.
- Describe how devices communicate across an Ethernet network.
- Describe the cable requirements, distances, and transmission mechanism for the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet specifications for physical media, including 802.3ab Gigabit Ethernet and 802.3ae 10 Gigabit Ethernet.
- Explain the Ethernet frame format and the differences between Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, and 10 Gigabit Ethernet.
- Explain how the network devices, repeaters, bridges and switches, operate within an Ethernet collision and broadcast domain.
- Describe the Power over Ethernet (PoE) IEEE 802.3af specification and the typical implementation of PoE within an Ethernet network.
- Define the key infrastructure considerations to support the addition of Voice over IP (VoIP) traffic in a Local Area Network, Wide Area Network, and Wireless environment.
- Apply knowledge of how voice is sampled and converted into IP packets to determine the appropriate CODEC and packetization interval required to meet customer VoIP bandwidth requirements.
- Compare and contrast transport models, such as Voice over IP, Voice over Frame Relay, and Voice over ATM.
- Apply knowledge of the attributes of Real-Time Protocol (RTP) to identify why it is ideal for handling packetized voice in an IP telephony environment.
- Compare the unique attributes of User Datagram Protocol (UDP) and Transmission Control Protocol (TCP).
- Given customer bandwidth and voice quality performance requirements, choose the appropriate CODEC.
- Describe standard voice quality measurement models, such as the Mean Opinion Score (MOS) and the E-Model.
- Determine bandwidth requirements based upon call volume and CODEC selection.
- Given customer voice quality requirements, choose the appropriate method to implement Quality of Service (QoS).
- Describe the basic steps in a VoIP network health assessment.
- Identify the VoIP network health assessment tools available to perform VoIP network health assessments.
- Develop customer recommendations for network improvements based on sample network assessment scenarios in preparation for VoIP deployments.
